“I live in Cold Spring Harbor, and my house was built from ship timbers,” says Laurie Duke, whose design for the den was inspired by an oil painting of a sailboat on the water. Accordingly, she chose fabrics from Lee Jofa and Thibaut and a custom carpet from Stark, all of which give the space a breezy, seaside air.

Draperies made from a Ralph Lauren Home botanical-print fabric frame the cozy breakfast room’s double-hung windows, giving the space the feel of a bright sunporch. Decorator Laurie Duke also added a Cole & Son wicker-pattern wall covering and scalloped wicker chairs to amp up the airy appeal.

Meet Laurie Duke

This Resident has a heart of gold and a strong eye for design. The bright yellow door of Laurie’s house is a fixture on Main Street. What people don’t know is that behind that door is one of the bright spots of the community. Laurie recently renovated the teen section at the Cold Spring Harbor Library.

Glamorous Gray Kitchen

“Inspired by this beautiful home’s glorious and architecturally relevant past, I was excited by the challenge to make it sparkle once again. When designing the space, I carefully selected materials and finishes reflective of the home’s distinguished roots. I imagined the patina and spackle of a fine piece of jewelry which had been handed down through generations. A beautiful, calming palette of gray, white, silver, gold and a combination of textures return the room to its elegant beginnings, similar to a loved piece of jewelry….

Making Way For Baby!

I’m most inspired by an amazing nursery I saw on a show house tour this past year at the Vanderbilt Estate, in the caretaker’s Normandy Manor. Created by Laurie Guiliano-Duke, of Studio Guiliana Designs; it was love at first sight.  Laurie had also done a kitchen design in another design show house, Caumsett’s Winter Cottage, that I thought was magnificent – so I’m fast becoming a fan of Ms. Duke and her amazing talent.  Every detail of her nursery, that she titled “Orange You Happy!” is perfection and the seafoam and orange with the giraffe print is right up my alley (pardon the image quality as these are from her post card – I try to respect show house rules by not using my iphone to get pics, but so hard sometimes!!)  Enjoy!

Laurie Duke in Cold Spring Harbor custom-mixed the gray color she used throughout the cabinetry and trim in this Belgium-influenced kitchen she designed for the 2010 Design Show House at the Winter Cottage in Caumsett State Historic Park in Lloyd Harbor. “I like to call it an uncolor, she says. It can look gray in some light; in other taupe; in some light more Blue.”  Duke Says gray’s versatility and neutrality are great for showcasing burst of color….
